Margaret Island is a 2.5 km long island in the middle of the Danube
in central Budapest, between the two city parts, Buda and Pest.
The island is mostly covered by park areas, and is a popular recreational area for tourists as well as locals. The island spans the area between the Margaret Bridge (south) and the Árpád Bridge (north).
The island houses various sports establishments, like the Palatinus water park (the largest open-air swimming complex in Budapest), the Alfréd Hajós sports pool (where the European LC Championships 2006 took place), a tennis stadium and the Margaret Island Athletics Centre. The sport possibilities on Margaret Island include: jogging, cycling, canoeing, tennis, swimming and football.

The Margaret Island Athletic Centre is situated 200m from the Margaret Bridge on the left side. Around the island there is a 5350m long running lap which helps sporters to prepare for competitions or just to keep fit from summer to winter, dawn to late evening. Club members can also use the 400m track & field lane of the Institute. Besides running facilities, a 20x40m football ground, 3 streetball courts and a sauna are also provided.
With a donation of the government and the city hall, the Margaret Island Athletic Centre in cooperation with Budapest Sport Office have provided a new permanent training system called TimePoint on the island's 5350m running track. Hungary is the first country on the continent to have this permanent training system installed.
The Margaret Island TimePoint is located under the tartan of the 5350m long running lap, next to the Margaret Island Athletic Centre. 25 meters further on there is a scoreboard next to the track. As soon as you pass the TimePoint, you can see your personal lap time there. And it's up there every time you pass it.
To use the TimePoint on Margaret Island, you can obtain a yellow personal MYLAPS ChampionChip transponder from the Budapest Sport Office.
Please be courteous to other users of the footpaths at all times. Take care when crossing or using any roads with traffic. Participants on the Margaret Island are unsupervised and activity is undertaken at the participants own risk. Operators of the Margaret Island TimePoint cannot accept responsibility for any accident or injury incurred from using the system.
